Lomi lomi

Lomi lomi

Lomi lomi is a traditional practice that originates in Hawaii. It is a type of massage and yet it is so much more. Along with the physical moves it is a technique that draws on natural energy to create a balancing flow that soothes mind, body and spirit. As one of my teachers put it, it is like reiki in motion.

A lomi lomi treatment is the ultimate in relaxation, relieving stress, anxiety and pent up emotions to promote calm and wellbeing. It might even feel like you have drifted off to another place, a place of calm and inner peace. It is a chance to slow down and give yourself a break from all the things that are running around in your head. And this promotes healing, not just on a physical level but also on an emotional level.

Lomi lomi uses long flowing strokes, often from one end of the body to the other, mimicking the calming waves of the ocean. It is sometimes referred to as loving hands massage as the intention through the energy work is the intention of love, to channel the healing benefits of goodwill.

Originally the practice was passed down within Hawaiian families to chosen healers who are known as Kahunas, Hawaiian Shamans. Each family would have developed their own way of performing lomi lomi and so the practice evolved in different ways, but always with the same principles and aims. It was used in a ceremonial way and on special occasions when someone was going through a significant moment in their lives, such as a marriage.

For me, lomi lomi has brought together the teachings from my energy work, bio-energy, pranic healing and reiki, with the disciplines of massage that I have learned from a number of teachers. Along with these I have formally learned lomi lomi from exceptional practitioners. I thank my teachers and guides, Patsy Jawo at The London School of Massage who spent a significant time in Hawaii, and Dan Joy who has brought a profound depth of understanding to my practice.

“The Lomi Lomi has opened something in me — layers unspoken now melting away. Its touch carries not only the wisdom, but a healing that moves through body and soul. It’s more than a massage; it’s a return to self.
I’m so grateful to be held in this sacred space.”
